Flower-Shaped Sweet Buns Recipe
- In a bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Add egg, butter, and salt. Mix well.
- Gradually add flour and knead until a smooth, elastic dough forms (about 10 minutes by hand or 6 minutes with a mixer).
- Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, until doubled in size.
Step 2: Shape into Flowers
- Punch down dough and divide into small balls (about 30 g each).
- Arrange 6 small balls in a circle on parchment paper, leaving a space in the center. This creates the flower shape.
- Let rise again for 30–40 minutes until puffy.
Step 3: Add Filling
- Use a spoon to press gently into the center space.
- Fill each with Nutella, custard, or jam.
Step 4: Bake
- Brush lightly with milk.
- Bake in preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 15–18 minutes, until golden.
- Cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar.
History
Sweet buns have origins in many culinary traditions:
- European brioche & milk bread: enriched breads made with butter and eggs.
- Japanese flower bread (hanabira pan): often shaped in petals with sweet bean paste or cream.
- Middle Eastern & Mediterranean breads: enriched doughs often flavored with honey or fruits.
This recipe takes inspiration from Japanese and European methods, combining fluffy milk bread with artistic shaping.
