Instructions:
1. Prepare the Dough:
In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
2. Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and let it foam—this shows it’s active.
3. Mix in Shortening:
Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, blend the shortening into the flour mixture until it forms coarse crumbs.
4. Combine Ingredients:
Add the activated yeast and buttermilk to the flour mixture, stirring until the dough is sticky and well combined.
5. Knead the Dough:
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently for 1–2 minutes until smooth.
6. Shape the Biscuits:
Roll the dough to about 1/2-inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter. Place on a greased baking sheet, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 30 minutes or until nearly doubled in size.
7. Preheat the Oven:
Set your oven to 400°F to get ready for baking.
8. Bake:
Once risen, bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the tops turn golden brown.
9. Finish:
Brush the hot biscuits with melted butter for that perfect finishing touch. Serve warm and enjoy!
