Hospice Chef Shares the Comfort Food Most Requested by Patients in Their Final Days
At an Oxfordshire hospice, chef Spencer Richards pours love into every meal he prepares for those nearing the end of life. For him, cooking for terminally ill patients isn’t just a job—it’s a calling.
Speaking to The Mirror, Richards shared that there’s no greater privilege than bringing comfort to patients through food in their final days.
“As a chef, I believe serving someone their last meal is the highest honor,” he said. “Recently, a 21-year-old patient didn’t connect with the standard menu. He was young and preferred street food, so we made it happen for him.”
One of the most touching moments in his career was baking a birthday cake for a 93-year-old woman who had never celebrated her birthday before.
“When we surprised her with the cake, she burst into tears. She was over the moon,” Richards recalled.
